Terms of use

The short version. Folio is free to use, with no watermark and no account required. Use it on documents you have the right to use it on. It is provided as it is, without a warranty — for anything that genuinely matters, keep your own copy of the original.

Using Folio

Every tool is free. There is no paid tier at present, no watermark on anything you download, and no sign-up required to use any of the ten tools. An account is optional and only changes where a copy you choose to keep is stored.

You keep every right in the documents you open. Using Folio does not give us any claim over them, and for eight of the ten tools we never receive them in the first place.

What you agree not to do

• Use the tools on documents you have no right to modify — in particular, Unlock removes a password from a file you can already open, because you know the password or because only the advisory permission bits were set. It is not a way into a document you are locked out of, and it must not be used to get around protection on someone else's file.
• Upload anything unlawful, or anything you do not have the right to send us.
• Attack the service: automated abuse, attempts to overwhelm it, or attempts to reach another account's data.
• Resell access to the conversion service or run it as a backend for your own product.

We may rate-limit or block use that is doing any of the above, and close an account that keeps doing it.

Accounts

You are responsible for keeping your password to yourself and for what happens under your account. Tell us if you think someone else has got into it. You can close the account whenever you like, from your settings.

The service is provided as it is

Folio is offered without warranty of any kind. PDF is a large and old format and real-world files are strange in ways no tool handles perfectly: a conversion may lose formatting, a compression may not shrink much, an edit may not land where you expect.

Keep the original of anything you cannot afford to lose. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for lost or damaged documents, for lost profits, or for any indirect loss arising from using Folio. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

Availability

We do not promise the service will be available at any particular time, and we may change or withdraw tools. The nine in-browser tools keep working in a tab you already have open regardless of whether our servers are up, because they were never using them.

Privacy

What happens to your documents and your account data is set out in the privacy policy, which forms part of these terms.

Changes

If these terms change, the date at the top changes with them. Continuing to use Folio after that means the new terms apply.
